Update: It’s only taken me 19 years of being in business to have this epiphany but here we are. I’m finally putting it out there and admitting to myself (and everyone else) what it is I really want. Freedom to work term time only.
That means 70 days of annual leave a year.
I think the reason this has taken me so long is that I’ve been so far down a path for so long in a career and industry where 70 days of annual leave is not the norm. In fact, most people will likely react “you’re a business owner, you should be working every day, you’ll always be “on”, you can’t possibly have 70 days off a year”.
Well since the whole point of being in business is to create something for yourself that fits with the kind of life you want to have, I am absolutely determined to make this my reality.
Up until this point I’ve measured my success by all the wrong metrics - how many people were on my payroll, how much money I’ve raised, and how likely I was to be on a path to a multi-million pound exit.
The reality is my true definition of success isn’t any of those things - it’s freedom.
The ability to design a business that works for me, rather than the other way around. And for me right now that means working term-time only so I can spend my summers in Italy with my kids. It means having the financial security to enjoy my life—without the constant hustle.
For years, I thought success meant more. More growth, more revenue, more work. But stepping back during maternity leave and watching my son start school changed everything.
Now, my focus is on building a business with leverage—one that doesn’t require me to be constantly “on” to make money and I’ve finally found a way to make that happen.
Words to live by: Don’t be so busy building a business that you forget to build your life.
What I’m reading this week: Essentialism: The Disciplined Pursuit of Less by Greg McKeown. The core idea? Success isn’t about doing more—it’s about doing less, but better. Instead of spreading yourself thin across too many tasks, McKeown teaches you how to:
✅ Cut out non-essential work that drains your energy
✅ Prioritise what actually moves the needle in your business
✅ Build a schedule that protects your time and mental bandwidth
If you feel like you're constantly juggling but never making real progress, this book will change the way you think about work, success, and time.
This week’s mindset moodboard:
