How do you know when to quit?

How do you know when something is working? Whether you should quit? Sometimes quitting is the best option, sometimes you just need to pivot…

The path to success in any of the above is far from linear. Curveballs are coming whatever you do and some things just won’t work. I know this is unpopular, and not what you want to hear, but getting good at anything takes time. People with seemingly overnight success stories are using their platform of past experience as a spring board. Myself included. So how long should you give it before you give up?

3 months. If you commit, and I mean seriously commit, you’re showing up consistently, you’re taking action based on a plan that has a fighting chance of getting you to that desired end outcome, and you aren’t seeing ANY results, and by any results I mean there’s no changes at all, you aren’t getting better on any front; then you should stop.

Let me give you a tangible example:

Let’s say you are a baker and you are selling your sourdough bread online and delivering next day in a specific area. You’re creating content daily online about baking, you are getting good engagement and traction on social media but you are only making a handful of sales a week. It’s been 3 months and sales aren’t improving. You feel like quitting but you are also being delivered just enough breadcrumbs (excuse the pun) to keep going. After all, social media appears to be working and you do have some sales.

Assuming of course that running a business as a baker is what you actually want to do and it isn’t just a means to an end, then in this case, I would pivot.

In this example, the service is clearly not something enough people want. Likely you aren’t in a big enough market (in this case restricted by geography) and there isn’t enough demand for what you are selling to hold the weight of the business you want to have.

So what about when you should quit completely?

When you don’t want to do it anymore. It’s as simple as that, if doing what you are doing doesn’t have a chance of getting you where you really want to be, you should quit. The power of no and letting go of something that doesn’t serve you and isn’t getting you to where you want to be is incredibly liberating. But that doesn’t mean it’s not scary to do. So, should you quit or should you pivot? Only you know the answer.
